53rd Universal Periodic Review of human rights: UK Statement on Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

UK Statement at Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Thank you Mr Vice-President,

The United Kingdom welcomes Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ participation in the Universal Periodic Review and thanks the delegation for its engagement.

We welcome steps taken to strengthen the protection of human rights, including efforts to address gender-based violence. We encourage further progress to ensure that all people can enjoy their rights equally and without discrimination.

The United Kingdom recommends that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines:

  1. Maintains the de facto moratorium on executions and undertakes a review of legislation on the death penalty with a view to abolition.

  2. Strengthens legal and policy protections against discrimination and violence, including for LGBT+ people, and takes steps to ensure the equal enjoyment of human rights for all.

  3. Establishes a clear and predictable statelessness determination procedure that provides basic procedural rights and safeguards for stateless persons, and sets out a timetable for its implementation.

The United Kingdom looks forward to continued engagement with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on human rights issues.

Thank you.
