53rd Universal Periodic Review of human rights: UK Statement on Suriname

UK Statement at Suriname's Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Thank you Mr President,

The United Kingdom welcomes Suriname’s participation in the Universal Periodic Review and thanks the delegation for its engagement.

We welcome efforts to strengthen the protection of human rights and the promotion of equality. We encourage further progress to ensure that all people, particularly children and young people, can fully enjoy their rights and access essential services without discrimination.

The United Kingdom recommends that Suriname:

  1. Strengthens child protection systems and services, including measures to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse, exploitation and trafficking, particularly in rural and interior communities.

  2. Strengthens implementation and accountability mechanisms for the National Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Policy (2020-2030) and Adolescent Health Strategy (2023-2030), including comprehensive sexuality education and confidential access to youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services.

  3. Strengthens legal and policy protections against discrimination and violence, including for LGBT+ people, and takes steps to ensure the equal enjoyment of human rights for all.

The United Kingdom looks forward to continued engagement with Suriname on human rights issues.

Thank you.
