Call for evidence description

View this call for evidence in Welsh.

This call for evidence seeks information and views to strengthen the Department for Work and Pensions’ evidence base on State Pension deferral.

We want to understand:

  • why people defer their State Pension
  • how well they understand their options
  • what influences when they claim
  • their experiences and the outcomes of their decisions
  • any barriers or difficulties they encounter

State Pension deferral allows people to delay claiming their State Pension. The arrangements provide flexibility over when people claim and, depending on the applicable rules and their circumstances, may result in a higher weekly State Pension when they claim. The increase, which is added to their regular State Pension, is known as extra State Pension.

The evidence will help us understand how the current arrangements work in practice and identify matters that may warrant further consideration. This is an evidence-gathering exercise and does not propose specific policy changes or assume that the current arrangements should be retained or changed.
