Over the last week, we’ve heard from members and institutions on the benefits of Professional Recognition and how it can benefit you. Today, we’re exploring the key steps you need to take to kick-start the process, as well as outlining what support the GSE Profession provides to members looking to obtain recognition.
1. Understand the requirements
Each professional body has its own criteria for recognition, such as academic qualifications or appropriate work experience. Review the eligibility requirements on the institution’s website, including qualifications, experience, and competencies. Some even have qualification checkers to help you understand if you meet the requirements! We also have a handy Professional Recognition Booklet, which contains more information about each institution, how you can record your competencies, and the process on getting your application funded. Please email gse@go-science.gov.uk for a copy.
2. Get involved
Engage with your chosen institution early. Some provide free access to certain events and networks where you can connect with mentors or individuals who have already achieved recognition. The GSE Profession also runs several events a year with many different institutions. To find out when these are on, please complete our GSE Professional Recognition offer form.
Take advantage of the wider support offer from your institution. This could include information sessions or one-to-one advice to help you prepare your application and succeed in your assessment.
3. Choose your pathway
The GSE Profession offers different support routes into recognition, such as our Express or Aspiring cohorts, depending on how close you are to meeting the requirements of your chosen qualification. We provide tailored support through a GSE mentor, cohort workshops and case studies to help you progress through to attaining recognition. For more information on those cohorts and how to join them, please email gse@go-science.gov.uk.
4. Prepare your application
Gather evidence of your qualifications, professional experience, and achievements. This may include a portfolio, references, or a written statement demonstrating how you meet the required competencies. Ask a mentor or line manager to review and provide feedback.
5. Submit and reflect
Once your application is ready, submit it according to the institution’s guidelines. Be prepared for an interview or assessment and use any feedback to further develop your professional skills. Once registered, your chosen professional organisation will continue to support you in maintaining your new status for the rest of your career.
